Blender EEVEE Sun-Screen Toon And Comic Shader

The Sun-Screen toon shader is a powerful EEVEE toon and comic shader.

The combination of a shading mask, lamp colors, and the layer mixing design is what makes this shader powerful. And if you purchase the paid version you get the the pattern feature as a cherry on top.

There are four variation of the sun-screen shader. Each one has a different levels of complexity. The Lite version is great for a clean vector graphic style, and The 2 pattern versions are excellent for a comic feel.

Shading Mask:

When a artist is shading by hand he/she has no requirement to obey realistic light physics. typically he will follow the physics until he has reason to break the rules and bend the shading to his creative will. that is what a shading mask allows you to do, Bend and Break the simulated lighting rules.

You can use the shading mask as a slider, or plugin a fresnel node, or paint a custom shadow mask. And even mix that mask with a fresnel node if you wish.

Lamp Color:

That's Right! The Sun-Screen shader can use the color from your lamps. Just turn "Use Lamp Hue" and "Lamp Saturation" to a 1, and use the color and specular lamp settings to control the colors.

Mixing Layers:

Using the "Value" output as a "Fac" input allows you to mix layers of this shader with different setting and inputs to produce a variety of effects. for example combining a glossy based Sun-Screen shader with a diffused based Sun-Screen shader.

Shading Pattern:

A shading pattern takes a pattern and uses it to pattern you shading. Like halftones or crosshatching.

Using the 10 provided pattern nodes you can create a many effects. And when that’s not enough, I have prepared a “boilerplate_image_pattern” node to allow you to quickly create your own.

Normal Map:

A happy accident of having the core shader outside of the toon shader is that it leaves the normal inputs exposed.

Go ahead and give the free version a try, or purchase it and get the extra pattern feature.

Notes:

Any input with a * before it means that that input is required. The main shader requires a shader input, (ie Diffuse BSDF, Glossy BSDF) and all of the pattern nodes require a normal input. (ie Camera Data, Texture Coordinate)

Both versions of this shader have been licensed under creative commons 0. besides that you have my permission to use and redistribute it however your project requires.
